Each year I am blessed with going to the beach. This quiet time to myself has become a time to focus on “Being Still” (Psalm 46). This year, God shared with me, that “being in the middle is a good place”. The explanation came to me this afternoon as I pondered Psalm 46 and a friends suggestion I consider the importance of “the rainbow”….
Here is what I learned. The 10 days I was at the beach it was cloudy in front of me (the future) while dark and cloudy behind me (the past) . I could see and smell the rain as the wind blew across the shore line…. In previous years, Sunrise has been a very special time with the Lord while at the beach but, this year, there were no spectacular sunrises due to the heavy clouds. The same was true for taking photographs of sunsets… all that was visible were the dark clouds and rain sheers each afternoon. If I was lucky, I’d see a hint of a rainbow.
As per my morning routine, I went to meet the Lord 30 minutes before the sun was to rise… I tried not to be disappointed with the cloudy sunrise, I wanted to know what the Lord had for me in the clouds. It was the same for the sunsets… this year I could not take one picture a sunset, due to the afternoon storms. Yet, I stayed at the beach for a better part of each day. Why? Well, the sun would rise above the morning clouds and shine on the beach! I very much felt like I was sandwiched between the clouds. The SUN was shining where I was… IN THE MIDDLE. If I had stayed indoors because of only being able to see the clouds… I would have missed the blessing of the sun’s warming rays… a time when I feel that God “fills me” to face the coming year. (song: “Fill My Cup Lord”)
I have become more aware that “being in the middle” means that I am present in my everyday. “Being in the middle” means I am less likely to miss out on current relationships because I’m not regretting things in the past or worried about what the future will hold.
Just as I looked for the sun each morning, I also looked for a rainbow each evening. Only little portions of a rainbow could be seen on several evenings. As I thought about the rainbows I realized that I needed to be “in the middle”! With the clouds and rain on one side and the sun shinning on the other… the rainbow (our promise of HOPE) is IN THE MIDDLE! “Being in the middle” is a great place to be!
I’m looking forward to this years lesson of “being in the middle” and what more there is to be discovered.
